Chapter 21

Cadlyr hadn’t ever thought much about the process of having his hair beaded and braided. It’d been something that for most of his life he had gone without. During his time in the village of his birth, he’d only had it decorated once—and that was for the gathering where he’d met Evlithar. After that, he was no longer considered the son of the chieftains and without status, he didn’t have the right to anything fancy. His arrival at D’Vaire had changed that. After his parents’ death he’d become chieftain, and Talfryn wasn’t going to let him get away with the plain look of a peasant. It was his brother who had taken on the task and mostly Cadlyr tried to stay patient while he endured it.

He was finding it was an entirely different scenario when there were two elegant blue hands running the brush through his long tresses. Cadlyr could feel the warmth of Evlithar’s body behind him, and the scent of his skin filled his nostrils. Instead of being bored, Cadlyr was focusing on trying not to get hard. His mind might be taking its time adjusting to Evlithar, but his dick was ready to take the Valzadari elf to bed.

“How long are you going to brush his hair?” Talfryn teased.

“It’s very silky. I could brush it forever,” Evlithar responded.

“Shut up, Talfryn. He can brush it as long as he wants,” Cadlyr said.

“Right, because Talfryn never spends extra time brushing Lorcan’s hair,” Corwin joked.

“It’s my duty to appreciate the fact that Lorcan’s is growing back,” Talfryn remarked.

“I do have our mating athame. I can chop it off again if you prefer to avoid that particular duty.”

“You used your mating athame to cut your hair?” Evlithar asked.

“He also wanted to kill me with it,” Talfryn told him in a voice dry as dust. “I might’ve forgotten to mention—Lorcan has had moments of insanity in the past.”

“My goodness, I haven’t done this type of style. How do I know what to braid and what to leave free?” Evlithar asked.

“There’s no science to it. It’s whatever you think looks nice,” Talfryn replied.

“It’s so long,” Evlithar commented. “Mine hasn’t ever been this long.”

“Valzadari don’t have a second color at the bottom as we do, do they?” Corwin asked.

“No, Fate colored our skin, not our hair,” Evlithar responded.

“You and Cadlyr had your mating ceremony arranged before. What mating athame would you have used?” Talfryn asked as he and Evlithar began working on Cadlyr’s hair in tandem.

“I’d hoped then to use the Valzadari one, which has been used for several millennia to bond our people, but I wasn’t sure if the Cwylld had a ceremonial dagger of their own Cadlyr would’ve preferred.”

“The Cwylld used whatever dagger was at hand. We didn’t have one devoted for that purpose,” Cadlyr said.

“Do the D’Vaires have a mating athame?” Evlithar inquired.

“No,” Talfryn replied. “Each couple has used an athame they already had like Lorcan and myself or Gavrael and Gedeon. For those that didn’t own one, Madeline has made them a dagger.
